Most healthcare provision is free and some private insurance covers additional health charges for foreigners and locals.
Basic Medical Education
Basic medical education in Denmark starts after secondary school education. All bachelor programs are taught in Danish. Faculty of Health and medical sciences of University of Copenhagen offers several bachelor degree programs. Basic medical education in Denmark consists of Bachelor in medicine and Masters in medicine. After master degree doctors can choose further specialization training. In Denmark students are required to complete :
- A 3 year bachelor program
- A 3 year master program leading to the title cand.med [MD]
- An optional (upon application) three-year PhD program

Denmark Medical Residency
As far as Denmark medical residency is concerned, foreign medical graduates should first get registration with Danish Health and Medicines Authority. After that they can start their Denmark medical residency training. Doctors after passing registration exam should do 12 months basic clinical training .
Residency or specialization training in Denmark is overseen by three regional secretariats
- Northern regional education and training secretariat
- Southern regional education and training secretariat
- Eastern regional education and training secretariat
During Denmark medical residency training or specialization, doctors should study three types of courses i.e. general courses, specialization specific courses and research training courses.

License/Registration
Foreign medical graduates must apply to Danish Health and Medicines Authority (Sundhedsstyrelsen) for License/Registration to practice medicine in Denmark
All doctors are required to get authorization from Danish Health and Medicine Authority to work in Denmark and Greenland.
After passing exams doctors will get temporary authorization until they complete mandatory 12 month basic clinical training. After that they will be issued with permanent license/registration certificate to work in Denmark.
Eligibility
1. For Denmark medical residency
- Permanent License/registration with Danish Health and Medicines Authority
- 12 months basic clinical training in Denmark
2. For license/registration
- Basic medical qualification
- Passing Danish language 3 exam and medical written and oral exam
- Completion of Danish legislation course
- At least 12 months medical training or job in past 6 year. If doctor didn’t have any job or medical training in past 6 years he/she is not eligible for license/registration application
Applying for XG1 visa extention
If you are applying for an extension of your current residence permit in order to obtain a Danish authorisation as a doctor or dentist and you have already stayed in Denmark for 2 years on based on a residence permit in order to obtain a Danish authorisation as a doctor or dentist, you must attach documentation that you have passed the Danish language test required to obtain a Danish authorisation.
You must also attach documentation that you can support yourself (and any accompanying family members) during the period of time for which you are applying for an extension. The documentation can be in the form of salary slips, bank statements or an agreement between you and the organization to which you will be affiliated.
If you are applying for an extension of your residence permit as a volunteer, you must attach documentation that you are covered by a liability and industrial injuries insurance during the period of time for which you are applying for an extension.
You must also attach a description of the job tasks, you will be carrying out during the extension period in addition to an agreement between you and you organisation detailing what you will receive from the organisation (allowance, food and lodging) or documentation of your ability to support yourself financially.
Biometric features required on residence cards
If you submit your application in Denmark or in a country where Denmark has a diplomatic mission, you must appear in person to have your biometric features (digital facial image and fingerprints) recorded. If you submit your application at the diplomatic mission of a country with which Denmark has a representation agreement, you must appear in person to submit two passport photos.
Upon arrival in Denmark, your biometric features (digital facial image and fingerprint) will be recorded. If you send your application by post or fax or if it is submitted by a third-party such as a lawyer, you must appear in person to have your biometric features recorded within 14 days of the application being submitted.
If you reside in a country where Denmark has a representation agreement with another country’s diplomatic mission, you must appear in person to submit two passport photos within 14 days of submitting your application. When you appear to have your biometric features recorded or to submit your passport photos, please remember to bring a photocopy of the first three pages of your completed application form. This will allow the immigration authorities to match your biometric features or passport photos with the application.Note that the processing of your application will not begin until your biometric features or passport photos are submitted.
Denmark XG1 for Medical Doctor & Dentist
A Danish Work and Residency Permit is required to reside long term or receive salary in Denmark. There are many categories of visa, with requirements specific to the purpose of stay and activities to be performed while in Denmark.
